“stage presence to spare”
Praised as a “spectacularly convincing Cherubino” by The Independent for her recent performances of Le nozze di Figaro with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Samantha Gossard returned to the company this season as a Resident Artist where she also sang Jade Boucher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking and Kate in The Pirates of Penzance. Ms. Gossard is a 2016-17 winner of the William Matheus Sullivan Musical Foundation Award and joins Santa Fe Opera this summer as a 2017 Apprentice Artist. Future seasons include her Austin Opera debut as Mercédès in Carmen. Last season, she was acclaimed by the KC Metropolis for her “clarity and poise” in her “stunning” (Independent) role debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, where she also sang Mercedes in Carmen and the Third Woodsprite in Rusalka. She also appeared on the Metropolitan Opera stage as a National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Other recent performances include Zulma in L’italiana in Algeri and Madeleine Audebert in Silent Night as an Apprentice Artist with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City as well as Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Jo March in Little Women with the UMKC Conservatory. While a member of the prestigious Gerdine Young Artist Program with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, she covered the role of Ms. Bass in their revival of Emmeline. As an Apprentice Artist with Central City Opera, she performed Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music, and covered the role of Jade Boucher in Dead Man Walking. With the Cleveland Orchestra she made her Severance Hall debut as the Rooster and the Owl in the critically-acclaimed fullystaged production of The Cunning Little Vixen. Awarded a New Horizon fellowship, Ms. Gossard performed Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte and Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Aspen Opera Theatre Center at the Aspen Music Festival and School.
On the concert stage, Ms. Gossard sang Octavian in selections from Der Rosenkavalier with The Duke Symphony Orchestra, the alto solo in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with both the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra at Severance Hall and the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. She was the alto soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 also with the CIM Orchestra at Severance Hall. She holds a Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she sang performances of the title role in Serse, Ramiro in La finta giardiniera, and also performed at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Conservatory Project.
